I don't have a filter on it at all. Man this thing is slow and twitchy. I am using spot metering and I will clearly have the center spot set to focus on a certain part of the scene and yet the photo will turn out with another area in focus.

I am planning a trip through Italy and the Greek Isles in two weeks and won't have enough time to send it back. I was really counting on this lens to lighten my camera bag and replace the Tamron 17-50 2.8 and Canon 70-300 USM IS combo.

I haven't had issues with mine since I removed the filter. Looking at the examples you posted it looks like your shutter speed may be a little slow for the focal length. Most of those are shot at around 1/100s but zoomed all the way in to 270mm. I think the VR is supposed to get you one or two stops without camera shake, but I think you may be pushing it a bit (if you follow the rule of only shooting handheld at the inverse of your focal length or faster). Maybe some of the others on here that actually know what they're doing can comment...

Your image properties shows ISO 800-1000. Thats way past what I have ever used with this lens. Are these shot in green mode?

Did you turn on the VC?

Also, I saw your EXIF data.. You are at 270mm and your shutter speed is 1/80 sec or 1/100 second. That is too slow for hand held. Typically you want 1/250 or more (especially with your 40D 1.6 crop factor) to get a clear shot handheld at 270mm. It is also known that this lens is not that sharp at 270mm, but I have achieved some sharp pictures at 270mm.

Your ISO is at 1000, seems like a pretty bright day, Your aperture is at 6.3, how did you end up with 1/80 shutter speed? What mode are you shooting in? Av? Manual?

Are you letting the camera choose the AF point or are you forcing it to choose the center AF point?

Hi everyone,

I was shooting in the "P" mode with my ISO set to 1000. The day was very cloudy around 6PM in the afternoon. It had rained off and on so there was not much sunlight, hence the reason for the high ISO.

I am using spot metering and center point AF.

The VC was turned on.

As stated, no filter on the lens.

I am not sure if 1/100 is slow for hand held (???) I usually shoot around 1/15 for my night club shots with the Tammy 17-50 2.8 using f4. Or is the longer the range (in this case 270) the faster shutter speed I would need? Increasing the range would need an increase in speed. Is that what was meant by "the rule of only shooting handheld at the inverse of your focal length or faster"?

One thing for sure, 80% of all photos from this lens go straight to the recycle bin.

P. S. The last photo of my little puppy was actually taken indoors.

P. S. S. What program is everyone using to view EXIF data?

You need to take into account the zoom setting when you take the shot. At max zoom on the Tamron, 270mm, your minimum shutter speed would be around 1/270 second. That's the general rule. Now, Tamron claims the 18-270 PZD can give you up to 4 stops (which is 8x) if vibration control (VC) is on. So with VC on, max zoom 270mm, you might be able to hand-hold at 1/30 second shutter speed and not get blur from camera motion. But it depends on a how steady you can hold the camera, since VC can only go so far in compensating for motion.

Our family was on an Alaska Cruise recently.. I had a whole selection of lenses including the Canon 70-200 F4/L/IS. I found myself grabbing this Tamron more often than my other lenses... I actually had to fight my newbie wife .. because she loved this lens too...

anyway... here are my recent shots with this lens... I cannot understand those who trash this lens...
