Do you need the 85mm if you have 135mm?

I want something wide enough for indoor asap. I dont have the cash to buy a 50mm yet. I want to trade my 85mm for a 50mm. But I am not sure if that's a good decision. Well i can go out and rent a 50 1.4 for 20 bucks a day. Is that necessary? If i will just use my 135 for outdoor mostly. I think what i can do with 85 can accomplish with a 135 by stepping back, and overall 135 is more bokehlicious.

I assume from your sig you're talking about the 85 f/1.8 vs the 135L. I have both and prefer the 135. If you were talking about 85L, I'm sure I'd say different as I've had my eyes set on that lens for a while. In your case, maybe get rid of the 85mm for a Sigma or Canon 50 1.4.

I actually prefer the 85mm focal length over the 135mm myself. Since you like the 135mm, have you consider something wider like a 35mm?

i would say keep both and add a 50mm when you can. At night and in a tighter space, 50mm is ideal.

The perspective will never be the same between both lens. But if you love your 85, you could also buy 50 f/1.8 for $100 and still had the lens.

Less and less, head and shoulders with little background/foreground type shots and almost never with the camera in portrait orientation. I still don't like 50mm on a FF.

Still, both are useful and they are not redundant but if I had to choose 1, the 135L would go.

In fact I am considering selling the 85/1.8 and 135L and buying the 85L. The 70-200MKII can substitute for the 135mm if I need it.

Yes, you need it. You can't have too much glass. A friend with the 1DmkIV recently picked up the 85 1.8 and he thinks it does a better job with color than his 85L Mk1.

I've never used a 135L but I own the 85 f/1.8 and I have never been disappointed with it - it's very rare that you ever find a person that IS dissatisfied with it. If it were me, I'd keep the 85.

In my experience, a 50mm pairs better with the 135L if you don't have any other lenses, but the 35-85-135mm combo is even better. The 35mm focal length is more versatile than 50mm indoors IMO.

Kinda depends on whether you are a general shooter or if you specialize in one area. Say portraits. Then one wind up with 2 each of 35, 50, 60, 70, 85, 90, 100, 105...etc. Beg, rent, buy a 70-200 zoom and use it for a while. Might help you determine what mm you need most.

As you can see I have the 35, 50, 85, and 135.. each has it's specific purpose.

i would just keep it. its not that expensive and again, it goes well with prime lens combos. I'd go with something wider though. If you really want to get something else, i'd recommend a 50mm (sigma or canon 1.4) so there's a little bit more separation.

I have both and love them both.The 85f1.8 is my main Basketball lens and my 135 does everything else.Wouldn't sell either one!!!
