Prime lenses are very seductive and additive; once get caught, rest is history :D

This year, I'll carry my 24, 85 and 135 with my 5D2 for travel, which are more heavier than my 28-300.

You're right, big white lens bring too much unwanted attention.

I keep this 28-300 for Africa and Alaska trip only. And some weekend sport for my boy, as it's only 300mm lens I have.

Canon 5D3 + Zoom (EF 17-40L, 24-105L & 28-300L, 100-400L II) & Prime (24L II, 85L II, 100L, 135L & 200 f/2.8L II; Zeiss 1,4/35)
Sony α7r + Zeiss 1,8/55 FE

My lens & camera are back from repair. I took them on a test drive at a local motocross track. But, after seeing x_tan's Spain pix, I hesitate to post my efforts
The lighting was from a harsh, mid-day, Texas summer sun. Not the best to work with.

I think that Canon's repairs have been successful so far.

Glad you got the camera back in working order!
I have been tempted by this lens for quite some time now and may be pulling the trigger on one soon. I do travel quite a bit and love the concept of a lens that has the range that this one offers. I usually change the lens several times a day between the 70-200, 24-105 and 14-70. But sometimes I just want to keep shooting without having to stop and change the lens.
There are some great shots in this thread! I am very tempted!

x_tan - Thanks. I'm still learning, though. #515? He is in a t-shirt because it is 38ºC !

vitacura - I had a really hard time deciding on whether or not to buy this lens. Like you (and everyone else), I wanted a 'one size fits all' lens. And we all know that such a lens cannot be perfect, hence the tough decision. While this lens is not on par with a prime (does that even need to be said?), I believe it is the best of its kind. Be aware, though, that this lens takes practice to get the most out of it. And shooting it wide open? You'd better use some really good technique. Many of the crisp shots you see in this thread are at an f-stop of 7.1 or greater. Add to that a bit of Lightroom work on all my photos. Not trying to scare you away, just want to make sure you're making your decision with your eyes wide open. (Maybe first renting this lens might not be a bad idea). Anywho, that's my 2 cents.

Tony, I'm so glad to see some beautiful action photos from you! (rather too many tourist photos from a part-time traveler of me :D).

I just notice lots dirt on my 5D2 sensors since I start to shoot primes. I'm not even travelling this time.

vitacura, I'm totally agree what Tony said. This is a slow lens and need lots light to shine.

It's good to see this tread still going. After six months with this lens I still love it. It doesn't seem as heavy as many complain about. The only time it has been off the camera is for my wife to shoot taekwondo testing. The 28-300 lens intimidates her so she uses the kit lens.

That is a good point about IS and faster shutter speeds. I was planning on using IS when shooting an air show later this year but will have to rethink that now. For prop blur it makes sense to use IS setting 2 but maybe not at all for the jets. Last year I used a Rebel XT in the sports mode and 75-300 USM and did OK with manual focus for the first attempt. Shutter speed was so high that camera shake wasn't much of an issue. If the 28-300 isn't "fast" enough I can always go manual again. Experience has shown to wait until the planes fill the frame so auto focus may not be as big a problem. The 7D's auto focus does a better job too.
