My very old 20-35mm f2.8L is giving me an error 001. I have attached it to my D60 and later, a 7D, both of which gave me the same error code, unable to communicate with lens. I cleaned contacts as directed with an eraser but to no avail. I had called Canon regarding a possible repair. They said that they will no longer repair this lens due to the lack of parts..:( are there any options other than junking it? This lens has been very meticulously cared for in a temperature controlled environment throughout its life, I hate to see it dead.

Tape the contacts and use it as a MF lens... you won't be able to change the aperture but it is perhaps more useful than turning it into a paperweight.

Hello photobitz!

Thanks for the reply, I tried the tape but the aperture is stuck at 00. I am not able to take any photo at all at the MF setting :(

Well... I'm definitely no expert when it comes to finding repair facilities but there is a seller on ebay that has alot of nos parts for defunct canon lenses. And... apparently they will do the work as well. Quick search on ebay for "canon 20-35 repair" found him as well as quite a few parts. Here is a link for the repair search:

Here is the link to the repair outfit with all the nos parts:

You might want to get in contact with them...?

I recently acquired this lens locally. I haven't really gotten much opportunity to use this lens but here is one of my first photos with it.

Sorry for the soft image.

This lens will hold me off from buying a 24L...at least for now.

I've owned the 20mm USM and hated every bit of it. My copy wasn't very sharp and the focusing accuracy was terrible too. I just bought a 20-35 L for a 5d mark ii and I'm really excited to shoot it.

Does that mean I should try to find a 20-35L instead of the prime 20mm?
