Anyone here previously have the Canon or Sigma 50mm f/1.4 and upgraded and now happy or is the manual focussing just painful?

Since I'm shooting with the 5D Mark II is it best to change the focusing screen to use this lens or can I just keep everything stock and throw the lens on and shoot. I really don't want to start taking stuff apart.

Hard to say if it is 'best' for you. I changed my screen out but, for me, it was not a huge difference.
It is really very, very easy to change the screen out. There is a little tool that comes with the new screen that makes it easy. Yeah...you have to be careful, and I wouldn't swap the screen out in a sandstorm. My 2 cents is you shouldn't worry about doing it if you are curious to see what kind of improvement in focusing you can gain from changing screens...
For me cost of a different screen was not too expensive...especially given the price of a 5DmkII and a Zeiss lens, so I went with it.
Been shooting with the new screen for couple years.
P.S. If you do decide to swap screens, make sure you change the custom setting in your camera to reflect the type of screen you have installed.
