Good deal. The good thing about Craigslist is that you can try it first to make sure it works right. Not everyone is a gear head, not everyone cares about getting the absolute top dollar market value, and not everyone is out to rip you off (although all of these things do happen from time to time). Meet the person and try it out.

That price is a little too good to be true. $900 is a fair price for a white box version. I'd ask for a copy of the purchase receipt in his name. ;)

Transaction went smoothly! I got an even better deal though :D He told me he's always looking for new assistants.. and given that I've always wanted to get into professional photography, I think this is a pretty sweet opportunity :p

I wouldn't say this is too good to be true. I've owned the 24-105 3 or 4 times and NEVER paid more than $800 for it, even when I bought one new from a kit.

Do kit lenses inherently have less value versus their boxed counterparts?

Yes, because they don't come with all the "stuff"--its own box, manual, etc. Silly reason, but there you have it.

Someone on Craigslist is selling a 24-105L for $775. Apparently he hasnt used it once since he got it a year ago. His story is that on his way to a photoshoot last year, the shutter on one of his cameras died and he was forced to pick up a new camera . However, the store only had the 5D2 kit in stock so he grabbed it.
Took it hiking today so it got a little dusty :p When I got it, it was in pristine condition

Jesus did you throw it down a hill or something? I hike alot and my gear never comes out looking like that. With that being said looking at the picture I find it hard to believe he's never used it.... It looks well used lol, but at that price it's a steal!

congrats..
but, imho CL=crabshoot but I did find few items very reasonable. Last few months. 17-40mm, and 10-22mm. Best this year was 50mm 1.4 for $60 that had AF issue. I sent to Canon for repair for $96.

I paid 850 australian for my 24-105 in mint condition, i was very lucky :)
And not much crime in Perth to worry as much about getting mugged for my gear. it is in the back of my mind if someone wanted to meet away from their home though :)
