From what I know they don't do that. They don't know what the first buyer may or may not have done to the equipment - selling it "new" and having an issue is bad for their business reputation.

fair enough.

to backtrack just a bit, can a store that is going out of business send back canon gear to canon? Why would canon take it back? I assume they make less selling it refurbished (because of the man hours spent inspecting it all) then they do selling them to stores right? Otherwise canon would just sell them all themselves... no?

Most companies will take back product, but at a reduced rate. They call it a restocking charge. 20% is the going rate. Not saying Canon does this, but you never know. That could explain how they can sell the items as referbs and come out to the good. :)

more importantly where and how much.

i hate when people say they got this crazy deal but never say where or how much.
if it was such a good deal why not say where and how much, maybe others want one too?

Congrats! I had to wait a week after ordering mine because of the July 4th holiday. Just got it last Friday with a date code of UY. It was in PERFECT condition. I have some test shots on my flickr.

Mine was brand new too, at first I thought I had focus problems with it, but it was my body that had a slight auto focus problem.

Lens was brand new too w/ UY date code as well :)
