I just purchased one locally for $700 without the hood. It would have cost me $900 for a new one with the hood, after taxes. The main thing turning me off is how it's a 7 year old lens purchased in 2004. I now feel that it's a bit ridiculous that I actually bothered to pay that.

Was it worth it? I have some little regrets- feeling a bit uncomfortable that I really only saved ~$160 (200 minus whatever the hood was worth) and ended up with something that's been used for 7 years. I forgot to check whether the hood was there after I paid the guy. This was through Craigslist, not POTN.

The lens itself is very nice. Or, is it typical to only save such a small amount for used items in this hobby?

I have seen them go for $575 and up on the forums. Doesn't really matter though, are you happy with the lens? If so, then no problem. Now, that price I mention is American, so don't know if you mean $700 Canadian.

I think if you bought it for 15-20% off the "new" selling price (tax not included), it would be a good deal. The going used rate here in the US is about $575-650 depending on the condition and age of the lens. Recently, Canon USA had refurbs at $575 (tax not included).

POTN is good resource to check current used prices of gear.

I know there were price hikes recently, but last year I sold mine on this forum for $535 shipped.

note: OP is in Canada, so I'm assuming he's (she's?) talking Canadian dollars here...

yep, so if you convert to US$ then the price is right in the ballpark of other used prices...

I bought mine a few months ago off this forum for $615 USD shipped. I think it has a UW date code, included everything in retail box.

I'm happy with the lens, except I'm wondering whether I made a good decision since buying a genuine Canon hood (which it didn't come with) will run me quite a bit (that I would have got if I bought a new lens). i.e. Ide only be saving about $150 off the new price.

sometimes you get ripped off in an impulse buy. it feels bad, but oh well, gotta move on. i'm just recovering from an impulse buy also.

In case it matters to you, I've owned 2 copies of the 17-40 over the years. I do not recall ever using that hood for any reason (in fact it is in the box ever since I bought mine). That hood is so shallow it is almost useless for protection (maybe helps a little with the flare but that's about it). Also, you can buy Canon hoods used or non-Canon brand that will probably do the same job as a brand new hood.

Learned your lesson, next time be familiar with what you're buying and check everything before leaving.

the fact that the lens is 7 years old has little impact on its value - it's really the condition of the lens that's going to dictate its value
whether the lens is 7 years old, or 2 years old, any repairs needed will cost the same

I paid around $700 CDN for mine about a month ago - came with hood and pouch, and I think is around 3 years old (I forget the date code)

Actually, the CAD is worth more than the USD at the moment. His $700CAD is approximately $715 USD.

Anyway, that's an OK price. I wouldn't pay any more than $600 USD for this lens. As long as everything's in good, working order, I think you're fine. You can always flip it back on CL for the same price, if you can find a lower cost one here.

Regarding the hood, see if you can find one for sale here. They usually run $15-$25 shipped.

FS: Nothing for now.

and with prices going for upwards of $650 (give or take), then this isn't that far off, in the ballpark as i said...
