Does classifying this lens as a "fast" lens mean that it will focus "fast" ?
or exactly what does "Fast" mean?

low aperture of 2.8 or faster (f/2 f/1.8 f/1.4) but yes it does focus very fast to but that not what it means. Hope this helps

Mine takes forever to focus, and I miss many shots because it won't focus. I'm thinking I got a bad lens --- THe one I rented focused much faster than this one I purchased.

Make sure you give the lens a 'hint' of focussing distance using the distance switch, it speeds up focus time.

I think you meant "High" aperture of 2.8 or faster (f/2 f/1.8 f/1.4) :)

Does this happen when taking pictures far away? If your to close, it won't focus properly.
