Canon 50D
400 5.6L
No blind
I believe these are all uncropped with no cloning except to eliminate dust spots.

1. Don't drift too close to an Osprey nest that's right on the water. This is Mom. Dad, who I really wanted to photograph so as to not disturb the nest, had a fish and launched himself in the opposite direction as soon as he saw me. I love the feather detail but the head isn't actually in focus when viewed any larger.

2. I found a place behind a small line of trees that's only accessible at high tide via kayak. Lots of birds hang out there, and the smaller ones let you get close. This is a female red-winged blackbird.

I very rarely see Mom leave a nest. She came as close to me as any osprey ever has. The minimum focusing distance of the 400 is 11' and she came within it easily. They move FAST when coming directly at you. That shot was pure luck. She must have been as close as 3' as I was paddling away.

Brave guy in that kayak! I hear too many nightmare stories about camera gear and kayaks. I guess this is one of the better times!

Ha I finally have a gear list!
Canon 60D, 18-135, 50 1.8, 55-250,
Canon Rebel XS 18-55. Some flashes and filters and a tripod with a bag to put it all in!

The herons really surprised me. I only see them occasionally in the marsh and I saw 2-3 just in a row of 6-7 trees.
