Take a point and shoot, drink cocktails, and forget about photography. Problem solved :-)

I'd hate that..

Little story:

About 6 years ago I went to Washington DC, About a week before the trip my EOS-3 met an icey death on the pavement, I cursed quite a lot about this fact and looked at my options...At the time, Film was starting to get harder and harder to acquire and get processed here, but at the same time DSLRs were still VERY pricey (There was no "sub-1000" DSLR at this point...a 30D was going for $1400 body only, a rebel was about $1000)

I had barely week to replace the EOS-3 with something, ordering a film SLR was an option from online, but it might take time and then what if it was broken or something when it arrived?

So I thought about it and figured "Well, a point and shoot will work" and went out in a rush and bought a Sony superzoom camera, figuring that it'd be very SLR-like...

I was very wrong, The IQ was....acceptable only in daylight, the metering was horrible, the "steady shot" didnt work at all, the battery life was garbage, the controls sucked, the viewfinder made my eye hurt, and it wasnt a very wide wide end (I think it was 35-350mm equivalent)

I got back and had about 10 pictures out of the 500 i took that were keepers, I had almost nothing from it...

Of course my parents conspired behind my back and bought me my 30D as a late, very last minute xmas gift, it just wasnt able to get there until the 23rd or so (Of december) which was when i got home >.<

Before i got the 30D i was already going to return the point and shoot as it was practically useless for anything, after i got it, it DEFINATELY went back...

Since then i cant imagine being without a DSLR or an EVIL camera...

Friends don't let friends buy Sony ;) Sorry to hear you didn't get any good images. I did fine last year on holiday with a Panasonic camera, but I did have a DSLR for good shots.

Partially, i do agree if i had gotten the Canon instead of the Sony I probubly woulda been happier...

However what HAD happened was I bought a Panasonic Lumix at Circuit City's website, before I even got it I started feeling that it might not have a versatile enough lens in it, and since i cant switch lenses, i might want something with a bit more range..so i decided i should get a superzoom, I didnt even open it or anything...

I get to circuit city and try to return it, The guy says "its been opened" because the box wasnt sealed (Which is how i got it) and tried to shove a restocking fee down my throat, Said guy was also the manager, and being a real prick about things, He said if i bought a more expensive camera, then he could waive the restocking fee, I could not simply spend an equal amount, oh no, it had to be a more expensive camera

The Canon was $50 too cheap, i asked him if he could just waive it for this, i even offered to buy something else, But no, Not good enough, Had to be a more expensive camera...

Since it was getting late and that and i really didnt have the time to be messing around (As i left in like 2 days..) I said "Fine, show me one with the same features that wont get me a damn restocking fee"

He showed me the Sony, I told him i didnt have a memory stick or anything and i'd have to buy all new, he said that was the ONLY camera they had that fit the criteria

I relented, i bought it, I regretted it, I played with it a bit before leaving with what time i had and i thought itd be OK but...

Look, i was really mad about how i was treated, the guy was being a pretty large prick about it, but Losing 20% on a $400 camera was not something i was going to eat (The Canon was $350 mind you, the Sony was $420 + whatever a memory stick cost me, i forgot, i was WAY over my budget at this point) and i also didnt want to risk the money not getting back on my card quickly and me being completely cameraless for my trip...

I had to check - this is the Nikon thread, isn't it?

Actually, when space/weight is really a consideration I take my Canon G10, and get superb results from it. IMO much better than its successors.

I have a considerable aversion to anything Sony. Not particularly because of the products, some of which are rather cute, but because of the company itself. IMO they are the most appalling company in any field that I have ever dealt with.

5D & 7D (both gripped), 24-105L, 100-400L, 15-85, 50 f1.8, Tamron 28-75, Sigma 12-24, G10, EX-Z55 & U/W housing, A1+10 lenses, tripods, lighting gear, etc. etc.
