Good Day folks,

Long time lurker, first time poster.

A little background. I've always been interested in photography and luckily my dad has been a prosumer. I have been able to borrow his gear whenever I wanted. He has a range of cameras from a 1d III to a 50d. But the parents are moving to FL so its time for me to spend some money on some gear. I asked him to help with a build last night and its just gets overpriced with him, hence I'm asking here.

What I find myself shooting the most of are landscapes, some cityscapes, my 8 month old daughter and my dogs. What I would like to move into is some wildlife (birds) around our wonderful metro parks. I know with a limited budget this might not be possible on one piece of glass but I'm a poor student :)

Here is what I'm thinking. 90% sure I'm going to go refurbished through CLP. I also think that I am going to go with the 7d, although it might be overkill for me. Maybe move down to the 50d?

So:

7d or 50d - I've held them both and like them.
Lens: This is where I'm torn, do I blow the rest of my budget on the 24-105L or go with the 28-135 IS USM.

I also need to get a bag, UV and polarizing filter, and a flash I think(maybe 430 or a 580).

So any help would be appreciated. And thanks for making these forums a wonderful place for people like me to learn.

Chris

7D is fantastic but do you need the video capability?

50D refurbished/used = $700ish
Canon 70-200 F4 IS used = $1000sh
Tamron 17-50 f2.8 used = $300ish

Could potentially leave you $500 for a bag/cf cards/tripod/flash/etc.

I have the 24-105 on a crop body and although its a great lens I wouldn't recommend it for birding. Im thinking of replacing it with a wider zoom and getting an L prime.

Do you really need the speed of the 7D? Do you want video?

I love the option for video. Although its no camcorder, it will do what I need it to do. Better than my EVO will anyway.

My issue is I haven't found my niche yet I think. But can't find a niche if I don't have any equipment.

Thanks so far for the suggestions.

Assuming I go for the 7d, I might try to get pictures of the wife and her soccer team. But not sure on this one. Another reason to lean toward the 7d. And assuming the body will last 3-4 years(the way I handle equipment it won't).

Again, I really appreciate these forums, thanks guys and gals for all you do to answer questions :)

Welcome at POTN.

If you are going to chaise birds and dogs, take pictures of sports, 7D AF should help you a lot.
UV filter is not something very important. Even polarizer could wait. Fancy bag? Again, any backpack will do.
Flash? You could get non-Canon for 100$.
Lenses? I have Tamron 28-75 2.8 and Canon 70-200 F4. They share same filter size, IQ is very good.
70-200 F4 supports fully cheap Vivitar x2 TC as well.
This combo is not very expensive, works for me for landscapes, sports, birds and portraits.
Sometimes I feel limited with 28mm on my Rebel in the city, but I really like 75 end for portraits at f2.8.

I say go for 50D and spend more toward glasses.

This. Just start smashing the for sell section and pick up some gear. You can find some good deals on flashes and such..... and canon 50 1.4 from all the owners jumping ship to the sigma 50 lol.

Thanks again for the info. I'm leaning toward the 7d.

annnd Good news! One of my pistols finally sold so i have 500 more dollars I can spend on the camera build.

Now if I could only pick a lens. Or dare even through a refurbed 5d mkII into the process. I give myself headaches.

I went through similar process as the OP, but I started with a $3000 budget and ended up spending around $4000.

5D2 is definitely a very nice camera, but if do you go with it, you will only have enough to get one L lens, and that was the reason my budget swelled.

if you just want to go out and start shooting, then 5d2+24-105L (or 24-70L) is a good starting point, and allows you to learn/decide which lenses you want to get later.

how about 5Dc and two L lenses? just trying to get you to look at things a lil differently

The 5dc is just a little to old for my taste. I'm hesitant to even considerthe 5dII, and with the potential of a Mk III coming out at the end of the year, I may hold off on a FF for now.

So I think I'm going to go with the 7D, 70-200 f4L non IS, And I haven't decided on a small focal lens. Think I may go with the Sigma 17-70mm F2.8-4 until I can afford the 24-70L.

Again thanks for the help folks. I have done so much reading the last week my eyes are bleeding!

Just get the 5Dc and when the 5D MKIII (HOLD BREATH NOW) comes out sell the 5D and get that.
