Ok I love my 50D but my wife got me an X100 (fuji) on the weekend, and I have to say I'm blown away. IMHO it does live up to the hype. I am still firmly in "experimental mode" right now, so once I get a better handle on my favoured setup/modes I may post shots if people want. If this is "prohibited" on the forum I do apologize.

Combining a decent DSLR (50D) with this compact "old-school meets new-school" design will rock I'm sure. I have already noticed that candid shots are more candid than with the big "semi-pro looking" DSLR. This camera is well thought out, well set up, and a great easy to use tool if you want great IQ in a small inconspicuous package. Fuji really focused on IQ above all it seems, the pics are very sharp and detailed and colour rendition seems excellent IMHO.

It's obviously NOT a DSLR killer (for example, the AF is really slow in comparison with any modern DSLR, and it is a fixed lens so you're stuck with 23mm x 1.6 crop without the ability to change lenses), and focus is locked to the initial frame in burst so it's not great for moving subjects)...but it is pretty darn good. Thought that people looking for a second camera might appreciate these comments.

PS it shoots decent quality video too (720p/24fps).

Give it a few more weeks... and re-eval after the "honeymoon period" with the camera is over.

I had an opportunity to pick one up and I did. Gave it a shot and while it was "neat" and produced good images (as it should since it is an APS-C (1.5x) sensor), I found it under-performing where I needed it to. Low-light AF was extremely disappointing for me.

Size wise, although smaller, it's still not small enough to fit in a pocket (unless you're wearing a huge jacket/coat). So there went the convenience of a P&S argument for me.

I found myself picking up my 7D over and over again, and then to appreciate its ability to focus quickly and accurately in low-light conditions.

The x100 is a good camera. It just didn't live up to the hype for me.

Update - so far, x100 is easily exceeding my expectations in many ways.
Fuji has hit a home run, they've set a new high standard.

Elsewhere, others have commented that the sharpness, IQ and colour rendition are just as good or better than their 5DmkIIs and other great DSLRs. I agree, some of the pics are really astonishing.

The menu system really doesn't take much getting used to, contrary to all the whining I hear about it. I set up the basic parameters that suit my shooting conditions and go from there with the analog controls which are a dream, and occasional menu adjustments.

I'm also finding the camera makes some pretty impressive exposure decisions if I alllow it to.

Oyster, I have one too. You're wife is a great gift giver! It's a wonderful camera. It's great inside museums and other quiet venues because iso 3200 is so clean, assuming the focal length is right for what you need.

I picked up a couple of spare batteries on ebay including ac charger and car charger for 18.99. PM me if you want details. They work well and you will find one battery likely is not enough.

AF is not as good as a dslr, but not much that isn't a dslr is. The IQ is very good. It can flare if you're not careful - I don't have the hood, I'm thinking about that.

Here is a very nice set on Flickr showing off the x100. Not my photos, wish they were, I've always wanted to go to Hawaii. http://www.flickr.com …n/sets/72157626880854192/ (external link)

The IQ, colours, and high ISO capabilities are unreal, huh?
I bought another battery already...a car charger would be handy too though.
