After a few months of hand-ringing over whether to invest in a 1DMkIIN - I finally took the plunge yesterday :)

Spent the last few years shooting at Air Displays and Motor Sport events and as time went on, began to run into the the limitations of my trustry 10D - especially shooting fast jets at 600mph and 50ft above your head !!

The other side of my photography is fashion and portrait work, where the 10D is still perfectly capable and allows me to generate images which seem to appeal to the models I shoot, and the photographers I meet.

All I have to do now is transfer the undestanding of the 10D to the power of the 1DMkIIN :) - so I guess a few steps backwards while I get used to it - then onwards and upwards !!

Wish me luck !!

Regards

It will take some time and practice to master the layout of the 1DMIIN as opposed to the 10D. Practice makes perfect.

Congrats, Bryan! You'll LOVE that thing at the racetrack. LOVE. Learning the new features and layout is part of the fun...you'll get the hang of it in no time flat. By the way, did I mention you'll LOVE it?;)

Thanks for all the comments everyone - I don't have the 70-200L, but I do have the 100-400L for Aviation and Motor Sports, and the 24-70L for Portrait, Fashion etc. Hopefully the 1dMkIIN will bring out the best in the glass - that is if I get to grips with it.

I have no doubt about the transition taking time - downloaded the manual about a month ago and realised like most things, reading manuals doesn't do it for me apart from as a reference tool - I get far more out of just trying out the various features and settings. The big issue will be speed of handling (ie how quickly I can make the adjustments I need when in the field) - it will take time to familiarise myself with the different control layout - but that will come with use.

As was stated earlier, it will be a case of practice, practice, practice :)

Regards

Congrats! Working the menu will be strange a first, but I can now work mine in the dark without even looking. The other issue you will have is the 1.3 crop will take a dent out of your tele's. Other than that you will dig it......X2 coming from a 10D not a 20D.......the AF is going to blow your mind coming from that 10D. Have fun, I like the Standard pic style -1 Sat & Contrast, +1 sharpness.... for most everything......that is if your a jpg shooter.

Very, very true. At first it seems horrible. But, once you get the hang of it everything makes sense. I can hardly wait to hear about your first shoot with this camera. I know was in absolute awe the first time I shot with my MKII.

There's nothing like a 1-series camera. Nothing.

Hi Bryan
having just switched from a 10D to a MkII, you won't be dissapointed. The difference is unbelievable:D not just major things like the amazing AF and frame rate, (which i guess like me, are what attracted you to it in the first place). But small details make the thing so good. Batteries last forever, even in freezing temperatures, a seperate set of buttons for portrait use, not having to worry about water ingress, and the wealth of info available at a glance. Iv'e owned mine for less than a week, but love it already. As already pointed out the menu system takes a while to get your head round, the fact you need two hands to scroll through seems alien at first, but as you say by experimenting it soon becomes second nature. Fantastic piece of kit, and worth the substantial outlay, even for an enthusiastic amateur like myself.
I christened mine on Saturday shooting Husky racing in wet and freezing North Yorkshire forest, with wildly changing light, the camera coped admirably, the only glitch being at some point with gloved fingers i managed
to switch the lens to MF (IMHO a design fault on the 70-200) soon realised something was amiss, but it did result in a few out of focus shots.
Hope you get as much enjoyment from the camera as i am.
ATB
Alan.

Alan.

You're right about the AF - just can't wait to get shooting fast jets and fast cars again!! My panning skills are pretty good - not the best, but on the 10D my keepers ratio is pretty high. Hopefully the faster AF on the 1D will give me a chance of catching those 'extreme' shots which when you do get them - bring a smile to your face.

Howling Huskies - ah - lived next door to a racing team for a few years in wildest Surrey (always found it funny that you have a sled team in Surrey - lots of snow there :)) Never bark, just howl like crazy at feed time !!

Regards

Congrats on the new purchase. I love mine and you will diffently have a learning curve from the 10D. However it is well worth it. I just like the feel of it but after a day of shooting with a long lens it does get heavy.

Have fun.
