That was because they selected a different Sony image sensor to use. Canon makes and designs their own SLR image sensors. And it was done to use a lower noise sensor, where noise is a big issue for P&S cameras still unlike SLRs

A bit pointless to me. Low light performance of the G11/G12 is still unacceptable, and they've lost the enormous benefit of the 14.7mp sensor. I've used the G11 and went back to the G10 out of preference.

5D & 7D (both gripped), 24-105L, 100-400L, 15-85, 50 f1.8, Tamron 28-75, Sigma 12-24, G10, EX-Z55 & U/W housing, A1+10 lenses, tripods, lighting gear, etc. etc.

Manufacture always leave room for improvements. I've found that Mark II is a perfect camera for my job.

So what is actually known at this point on the 5DMKIII? I don't keep up with this stuff...

I'm assuming nothing, but has anything been leaked with a degree of reliability?

Nothing. Honestly, it's an assumption that there will even be a 5DMKIII at this point.

Just checking, thx. With all the chatter i'm hearing, it seems as though there has been an announcement or something.

I'm really surprised Canon will take until Feb to announce something.

Hopefully, some announcement will be made in their DSLR Dept. to gauge what direction they are heading. Feb. is so long away they may have to change specs just to compete.

I, for one don't want to see a split in the line for still / vid.

I think Rebel, xxD, 5D, 7D, 1D, 1Ds... so many different lines...

With all the new tech in mirrorless, focus after, stitching 4 frames for 4xMP it's an interesting time for digital cameras.

Agreed it can go either way. I'm just sitting patiently waiting to unload on a nice announcement if it fits what I'm looking for :D

Looks like its confirmed on Nikons end that something is coming:

Nikon has scheduled several press events in different countries on August 24th, 2011. This is now 100% confirmed from several different sources. Nikon did not have any scheduled press event for the last 50 f/1.8 and 40mm f/2.8 lenses, which makes the next announcement more important than the previous two.

I think Canon's decision with which 5DIII prototype to put into production will heavily depend on Nikon's announcment in August. Which is quite amusing, becuase Canon used to say that it was more worried about the rise of Sony than Nikon...which would appear to be spin.

LOL, just read the topmost post from the nikon rumours in vipergts831's link, the user says he wants interchangeable sensor... so he buys a nikon body and also buys the sensor he wants... that made me chuckle.

From an overall business perspective, Sony always had the capacity to be a bigger competitor.

From our somewhat myopic, photographers view of the businesses, Nikon does indeed look much larger than it is...

bye for now
