often not worth the trouble. had a couple of bad deals where i met people at/near banks and the sellers got crazy when i decided not to pay since something was off (one was a car and seller obviously was lying, but started going crazy when I called him out)

Care to expand on that? I'd like to read that story :D

Meet at the police station, tell him you want to make sure it's not stolen. When you guys meet up, ask the police if there have been any stolen reports placed on the body.

If he flakes, then obviously something is wrong.

Hmm... Assuming this guy is the original owner as he claims. Then he would have bought it at about $4500, then sells it at a $1500 lost. Why?? because "Canon sucks Nikon Rules!!!!" May be the guy stole his dad's camera.

People are interesting. They want good deals, but when opportunity comes they don't take it, instead they just sit there and assume there is something wrong with it (while somebody else already went and got the good deal).

My advice:

  1. Take a couple of friends with you, with baseball bats (don't show you have bats)
  2. Have one of the friends hold the money and only tell the friend to hand it over after you have inspected the camera.
  3. Try multiple lenses on the body.

At least he knows what an actuation is. He didn't refer to "clicks" or "snaps".
