I think you will find that hobbyist spend as much if not more on camera gear than many pros. Something to do with; if I only had this or that I could do so much better. Not true but it help justify buying new gear every year.:o

Ha, ha, I have used the "it'll help get great shots of out daughters" line before. However, I think hobbyists will spend the money specifically because they can and they want to, they don't have to cost justify it. Think about the amount of money people will spend on their cars, bikes, etc., despite it being just a hobby with no hope of any income being generated.
