Canon EF 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6 L IS USM

i'm currently using 16-35L for my walk around lens(attached to my humble rebel T1i) and 70-200mm 2.8(non is)for my wildlife photos. I've also considered extenders for the extra reach for the 70-200 but it also stops down to F4 (minimal to no loss of IQ)which is almost similar to the 28-300(besides the obvious of not constant) I'm leaning towards this lens for the extra reach and to fill in the gap of my 16-35l. Is this a smart purchase or should I lean towards the 24-70/24-105 to fill in the gap and stick with my 70-200 with extenders

I don't think that 28-300L can replace any other L, rather additional all-in-one lens.

I'm still using my 400D (mostly with 24L), camera body is more than capable this day.

28-300L is still the most expensive lens for me.

Also, thanks for tip from Tony / Two: I used AV priority to shoot sport last weekend. And the photos look ok.

Meeko031- congrats on the new lens. I'd be hard pressed to give mine up. X_tan is right though, this lens can't replace any other L lens. As for my most expensive lens, that would be the 300 f/2.8

X_tan- the sports pictures look just fine. Not like with the 300 f/2.8, but great nonetheless. It must have been hard to get your camera to focus on the black shirt of that player. At least that's been my experience with motocross jerseys. What f-stop did you use?

I used AV mode with f5.6 @ 300mm.

Can't shoot any sport this weekend - the kids bus to somewhere and also this is the last winter sport season for the kids.

Shooting sport is fun, no wonder many people doing it

They were shot wide open! I think they look great for being wide open!

Yes, after reading you used AV for sport, I think I should use wide open to 'separate the subject' with humble f/5.6

I want to try 300mm f2.8 IS II someday.

I used to pair with my 400D, and 400D just looks so sorry small

I'm going take my 28-300 for the cruising trip next year, as it's the only 300mm I have.

...haha, my small rebel does look silly on this lens, especially when fully extended. I saved for two months and could not decide to either get a new body or lens. I am not ready for a FF and it is pointless for me to purchase a 7D since it's another crop sensor. I will keep this body I have until the buttons and dials no longer work!

Always get more fancy lenses than fancy bodies.
I have 5D2, I also use 400D & T2i lots.
I have never consider 50D, 60D or 7D - for landscape, I go for the same / similar sensor with the cheapest price
