A good test of the light-gathering ability of the Tamron lens.

Here is one of my shots from last summer. I don't think I posted it here yet, unfortunately it is a little tight at the top.

Six-horse hitches of big Percheron draft horses, as seen through one of the Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8 lenses.

The fast lens was needed for decent exposures of the large black horses at the indoor arena.

Man...I really want this to be my next lens, but it seems like no one has them available for rentals!

LensRentals, one of the best known of the mail-order rental houses, stopped carrying the Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8 because of repeated repairs and failures. (external link) They have a point: this writer's Tamron lens, bought used, needed to be repaired when the autofocus mechanism stopped working. The lens was repaired, mostly because the work still was less expensive than a new 70-200 f/2.8.

Also, the Tamron lens still does a great job when the autofocus finally does lock correctly. A brief camera shop test of the Sigma equivalent, the next least expensive 70-200mm f/2.8 version, hinted that the Sigma lens' autofocus locks much more quickly than the Tamron lens, but the Sigma doesn't generate images that match those from the Tamron.

What-if's are risky, but...if Tamron ever updates the 70-200mm f/2.8 so the autofocus and handling are as good as their recent 70-300mm vibration control lens, and keeps the updated lens' price in the current unit's range, they would have an unbeatable product.

Yep - I did read LensRentals' article on why they don't carry certain lenses. However, Tamron's warranty is pretty long and I'm a patient guy. I've read that if you need rapid AF, go for the Sigma, and if you want slightly better optics, go for the Tamron. That's got me leaning toward Tamron, I think I'll end up having to buy this one new and return it if anything goes awry.

I also read the LensRentals page that had the same info about the Tamron. Personally, I never even considered owning the Tamron just from the lack of USM. But, after reading reviews and looking at as many sample pictures from various 70-200mm 2.8's...I settled for the Tamron. If I had the $$$ I would have definitely bought a Canon version. That being said...the Tamron really does impress me, despite the slightly slower and louder AF.
