Try the 17-55 2.8, its a standard zoom for your crop T3i, and it has constant f2.8 and IS, and it has a great optical performance. If your not planning on upgrading to FF soon, I recommend it.

Tamron 28-75 is similar range, great image quality, and much lighter/smaller/cheaper.

Barring the 17-55, there's also the Tamron non-VC 17-50. Great lens, but it does lack IS and hunts a little in low light.

But, the price is great! :)

Sigma 17-50 OS. At least as sharp as the canon, costs much less, has better build and warranty.

Alternatively, sigma or tamron 2x-7x 2.8's.

There are a number of 17-5* lenses from different manufacturers that fit the bill. Check out the Sigma, Tamron and Canon. I'd also check out the 15-85mm. It's not as fast, but it's well built and performs brilliantly.

BTW - the 24-70mm performs much better on a full frame. I have a T2i and regular access to a 7D. I never use the 24-70 on those bodies. But it is a natural on my 5D II. Constantly competing with the 16-35 for dominance.

I will be upgrading soon to 5d. So that eliminates the 17-55

if you like the range, +1 Tamron 28-75 f/2.8. Lighter and 1/3 the price.

This was my #1 contrnder but was afraid of the quality control issues. Is it a crapshoot to get a good copy??

If that's the case, hold on to the 24-70mm until after the upgrade. You'll probably wind up keeping it. In my opinion, that lens is geared toward FF use.

If you don't like it after your body upgrade, look at the lighter, longer, IS-enabled 24-105mm to fill the range.

Lens is sold. Mainly due to size. I thought i was gonna be ok with it at first but i wasnt. So it will be even bigger on a FF

Might consider the EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM on that T3i. Good reviews and probably a better size than the 24-70L.
