For turn of the century technology it still gets the job done nicely...

Indeed.

The images seem to have more punch - compared to those in the high megapixel 1.6 crop body threads. Better color and contrast at the least. Is it simply a matter of more experienced photographers owning this body? Or has that fidelity been compromised by the megapixel race?

I think it teaches you the make the most of a noisy sensor, ETTR, better post processing, etc... In the end this camera makes you a better photographer.

Although as old cameras go I think a 5D classic is at the top of my list.

I would LOVE to have a 5D classic to compliment my 1D. It would be the perfect super-budget combo for me.

Yeah,,, the combo of a 1D, a 5D, and a Fuji x100 would be perfect for all of my needs

Was out shooting my new puppy running around yesterday and boy did I wish I still had the 1D. The 5D is great, but I miss that burst.

So am I just dumb or does the 1D not capable of this back button phenom? Do I have to have a canon lens for it to work?

Well Geeky you could always find another or perhaps a Mk11 and yeah I know what you mean I tried using my 400D for some action shoots the other day but I am afraid I am now spoiled having used a 1D,funny once I thought 3.5 frames per sec was fantastic
