i'm generally against buying used electronics, especially so when it involves precision moving parts. but i see lots of used gear on the bay and cl which is tempting. i'm not comfortable buying something used on ebay so i'm considering craigslist where i can at least meet the buyer and check out the gear. when buying used, what are you looking for specifically? obviously i'll fire off a few shots, but other than hearing the shutter release is there anything y'all look for that might be a bad sign of something to steer clear of?

tangentially, how much of your gear do you buy used?

My vote: Go with eBay and get a squaretrade warranty... I don't think I've ever bought a new piece of equipment. At least since I made the switch from Pentax.

With all the stories about CL and ebay, i tend to stay away from both. I personally would only buy from camera forums such as this one and FM since you have access to seller feedback. All of my gear has been bought used on this forum and so far so good!

If you have concerns buying used, consider buying a factory refurbished products instead. Adorama nad sometimes B&H photovideo often sells Canon factory refurbished stuff for juat a touch more than used products and those come with a warranty and have been checked by a factory tech to make sure it's in perfect working order.

Adorama and KEH both have very good return policies on their used equipment if it is not as advertised. You can can buy used from them both with confidence. Buying used bodies can save you huge percentage compared to new prices. Used Canon EF lenses sometimes are close to new prices, so do your homework on this kind of purchase ahead of time so you know what good price is.

I'm a little leery of buying cameras or lenses on eBay these days, I've been burnt a couple of times on gear not as described but fortunately the two items weren't very high dollar items.

I've had excellent luck here and on FM buying used but you need to do a little homework on the seller. I bought my 1D4 used from another member here and saved about $1200 on it. It has worked flawlessly now for about 20k shots.

Just got a used 40D from a fellow POTN'er, and not only was it just as described, but he left a 4GB memory card in it for me.

We do indeed; a 90-day warranty which includes a 30-day returns period.

I stay away from eBay and CL but have had three very good experiences on here and FM. I picked up my 1D3 and 28 f1.8 here and my 70-200 on FM. All three transactions went very well and I wouldn't hesitate to do it again. Like someone else mentioned though, make sure you look into the background of the seller to get some kind of history/feedback.
