Caught a glimpse of this guy out the window. Had to run and get the camera, change lenses and put in a new battery but still managed to get a few shots before he flew off. I'm not a birder but my guess is a (juvenile?) gold finch.

An American Goldfinch, probably a juvenile, could be a worn female.

Wow, I just saw some photos of adult Goldfinches and I had no idea they were so beautiful compared to what I posted. Hopefully I'll have some pass through. Any suggestions on how to attract them?

I would recommend a Nyger Seed sock. Check out the photos from my blog last year. (external link) I bought the sock in the grocery store.
You may find the seed under the following names...
"Nyjer, niger and thistle are all names used to identify a tiny, black birdseed cultivated in Asia and Africa that is high in calories and oil content, loved by finches and other wild birds, and has been used in the feeding of wild birds for more than 40 years."

MonacoMama is correct. I use Nyjer seed but in tube feeders and once one Goldfinch shows up the word spreads quickly..I have anywhere from 10-20 at both feeders throughout the year. Very social bird. And they love water as most birds do but these especially.

Thanks for the info. I have a couple of bird baths but no feeders. I might have to get one now. I'm just afraid of attracting a bunch of unwanted birds like Starlings...and feeding the squirrels.
