I'd suggest emailing off line rather than a PM.
PM's can be read by people other than the two who are communicating.

Paranoid much...

Sadly it happened openly on an Australian Photography Forum.
Still amazes me the users didn't revolt on mass when told it was policy.

Absolutely 100% true.
And the story goes further than that.
A member who has close links with the forum owner PMed and emailed several members who were less than happy about a few things and were communicating off line and away from the forum about it.
The said person indicated they were unhappy about the same things, when in fact they weren't.
Instead, they were setting up several members and those emails were relayed to the forum owner.
You can fill in the gaps as to the end result.

Below is an excerpt of an email I received from the site owner on August 8, 2009.

"...there were a series of PM's and emails that were circulating between members regarding the 'click n giggle' brigade, as they were referred to. These emails and PM's were being forwarded to me by a party who was being sent them, initially. I then decided to review the PM system itself and investigate further...

...I was sent copies of some more communication between members once again referring to the 'click n giggle' brigage ,and investigated further PM's...

...
I and the moderators discussed the issues that were going on..."

Note the bits where he says "...there were a series of PM's and emails that were circulating between members...", "These emails...", "...I was sent copies of some more communication between members..." and "...investigated further PM's..."
Those emails were sent offline and away from the particular forum's internal system.

So, yes it did happen on another forum and I'm not for one nano-second suggesting it will or has happened on POTN.

I'm simply saying that there is a possibility that PM's on any forum (like almost any form of electronic communication) may not be as private you think.
The "News of the World" saga is enough evidence of that.

A comforting thing is that I have been given a virtually iron clad guarantee that it is not a possibility for PM's on this forum to be read by anyone other than the sender and the recipient.

Regards, Phil

It just re-inforces the old adage Phil, if you don't want the world to find out about it, don't commit it to print - to anybody.
