When I am in the middle of shooting and I am adjusting the shutter speed for example (which i check on the lcd monitor) the monitor will randomly go completely BLACK or essentially turn off.

I have to press Playback to get the thing to work again, then it will show the last pic I took, and go back to a black screen when I focus on something to get rid of the Playback.

Randomly it will start working again. But basically when I am in the middle of something I have to resort to the viewfinder to see how I am adjusting the shutter speed (or anything else).

Its obviously not the end of the world but this is just helping me with excuses to finally upgrade camera bodies.. although now I wouldnt be able to sell this broken piece.. Anyone had this or know a quickfix?

Check your "MENU" settings. There are several settings in the various menu's that allow the LCD screen to turn itself off or shut off saving power. These are later triggered by the "mode" selected and settings.

On my XS when I press the MENU button the LCD lights displaying the "menu".

Fourth menu from the left to right is a "TOOLS" menu displaying a wrench icon.

When in that menu - the fifth choice down - right below "Format" is "LCD off/on btn" and if that is selected the choices are:
Shutter btn.
Shutter/DISP
Remains on

Select "Remains on" and all should be well!!

Hope this helps.
