I was hoping you'd see that shot.....I was in the Officer's Club section for the show. I kind of thought he was hamming it up for someone's camera when I saw him doing that in post......

I wanted to add a long distance lens to the collection and have seen a few 500mm 4L IS lens. I have a
70-200mm 2.8L IS II and a 2X EXT II. Just not sure if that is the way to go. I was at the zoo shooting and it wasn't enough lens. I did not use the 2X ext though. Any input would be great.

The mere thought of haulin a 500/f4 IS from the parking lot and then spending 3 to 4 hrs. constantly moving inside the Zoo gets me tired just thinking about it ! I would have to get me one of them Scooter chairs they advertise for the Old folks on television. :p

The 70-200MKII + a 1.4 TC at 280mm will provide the best IQ & should be sufficient for most Zoo trips and even with this combo i use a RS-7 Sport strap for comfort. If you still feel you need the longer reach then the lightweight 400/f5.6 prime + a monopod + a Better Beamer attached to your external flash would be ideal as a lightweight combo for prolonged consistent walking shoots like the Zoo and produce better IQ then the 70-200MKII + a 2X with your crop body sensor.

Regards, Ron ;)

I can't imagine a 500/4 in a zoo not only would it be massively annoying to carry but people would give you "WTF" looks. Not the kind like "wow WTF you are the man" but more like "wow WTF, seriously?"

Another option is a 300 f4 and with the 1.4 you get 420mm f5.6. I don't which zoo you go to, but the 70-200 with 1.4 should be good for the most part. Last time I went I took my 300 and 1.4, which is a good combo.
