The Samsung Galaxy 10.1 seems to be the best alternative out there, but for me personally, the iPad Classic is the only one Id choose since Im very vested into iOS.

HP is out of the tablet business:

Looks like they took a real financial bath with their acquisition of WebOS and development of the TouchPad. It's no wonder they're getting out of the hardware business.

My favorite alternative - a laptop. Yet to be sold on all the hype of the "i" anything.

Funny - my 62 year old mother yesterday said she wants an ipad so she can watch videos during her 10 minute train commute. I said that if apple did not rob her then someone on the train certainly would.

THIS! Definitely this! I have both now, and I have barely touched my iPad since picking one up....

There is a great app in beta that does direct camera control over usb...

and the openness of the OS is much better than that on iOS (rooted vs jailbroken)

granted, there aren't as many apps...but on the same side that means there isn't as much crap either

Main reason I like it, I can backup my cards to an external drive when I travel (which can' t be done with the iPad)

Toshiba thrive is decent if you're willing to deal with some software quirks to avoid ios. Built in sdhc and USB ports. But alas, I returned it because it's still not better than the iPad. Android just isn't up to the task quite yet. Their next release looks promising though. We'll see.

I have an iPad 2 and just picked up an Acer A500 to play around with. After I got used to the OS it was ok but the apps are really lacking. I might keep it to play around with app development but it's probably going back.

I bought the HP Touch Pad the day before they announced their dumping of the product...;-{

That said, I have both the iPad and HP tablets and I like the HP a bit better due to its ability to play flash and it's multi-tasking is cool too.

I agonized over buying yet another Apple product, but the iPad2 is just so cool. It may be expensive, but it sure makes life fun. And wait a few months when the iPad2x comes out because the 2 version will be really cheap. The $800+ price tag is insane, IMO but I have no complaints otherwise. The battery life is 10 hours. :)

Galaxy Tab 10 looks very impressive, but what is with not having an SD expansion port? If these also rans are going to challenge Apple they need to quit doing things like this and give those of us that don't want to buy into an Apple product what we want in the first place - Freedom.

Toshiba Thrive looks very promising, too. I haven't seen it in person but if the screen is on par with its other specs it might be the product that makes me forget I don't yet want a tablet.

I was at the Verizon store last week and I tried the two they offered to compete with the iPad2. Very impressive, since they did multiple apps at the same time, but it wasn't as fun to me.

The most important factor for a tablet is the quality of the display. I've got the Motorola Xoom, and can't really recommend it for photography, I'll be replacing it fairly soon but with another Android tablet. Apple has the edge in polish, but I just can't live without the google tools. I use the turn-by-turn navigation just about every day.
