I think your saying 800 is backwards compatible to 400. 400 is not compatible to 800.

OP I was looking for a faster card reader last week for my macbook and came across the same problem you did. I'm not too crazy about spending $125 for a discontinued card reader. Firewire 400 slower rate the USB, but better at sustained speeds. Just ended sticking with my USB 2.0 card reader. Kind of a bummer.

FWIW I picked up a Delkin FW800 reader for $40 on Amazon about 8 months ago. Maybe it was just a fluke but it tells me they're out there.

i know i saw it too. but Delkin? seems like a cheap knock off of belkin. But i guess if it works it works? any one else have a delkin and like it?

Mine's not listed anymore as it was from a personal seller and it was used. I've never had a problem with it and it screams!!

Bryan, I've got the FW Sandisk reader also.
Cost me a little bit more than I would have liked but it's way, way quicker than a USB 2.0 reader.
It turned out to be one of the best accessories I've bought.

Did I say cheap? i said reasonably priced. and did i say my mac doesnt work? i said usb 3.0 and fire wire 400 dont? usb 2.0 is fine and fire wire 800 is fine too. that is why i was asking for any advice. that is what this forum is for right? ive seen the 800 from $39-$200 therefore reasonably priced would be around $100. I know i can go buy a usb for 2.0 for $20 but as you have noted i like quality things.

it doesnt really matter what you think of mac that wasnt the question i was asking. but look out they are currently the most valuable company in the world. millions of people cant be as bitter as you.

Life can be full of perceptions. I would say your snide reply to legitimate answers was bitter. You got all upset because you didn't like the advice then call me bitter to justify your actions. Don't get bent out of shape when a couple of posters offer you advice that isn't to your liking. It's a forum, you will often hear advice that isn't to your liking. Sometimes that turns out to be good advice that you didn't care to hear. It happens to all of us in all walks of life.

As for the value of Apple millions of people can be sheep. Remember when GM was the most valuable company? Millions bought them even though they were junk. Apple has created a cult of superiority through marketing. Exxon is a valuable company too. Doesn't mean I think think they're a great company with a great product. Time was that Microsoft was the most valuable company. By your reasoning at onetime Microsoft was a great product. Company value does not equal superior product.

Your original question implied that you didn't like the cost of the solutions you had found already. Maybe you just hadn't bothered to look yet. I assumed being an intelligent consumer having bought a mac that you would have researched on your own before coming to a forum for advice. It sounded that way to me at least. I gave you credit for doing so at least. Maybe that was unwarranted credit. Did you just go on a forum and ask before buying your mac, Hey guys, which should I get Mac or pc? Whoever talks the loudest wins! I would hope not.

PS, Steve Jobs just resigned. I wish him the very best with his health issues.
