Hey all.
I'm considering selling my 17-40 L and getting either a 24mm L or a 35mm L for my 5D MkII.
My problem is I enjoy Landscape photography, recently I have found myself wanting to try street photography and candid photography what do you guys reckon would be close to the ideal lens to cover these situations, 24 L or 35 L on FF ?
Cheers all.

What not use your 50, 85, or 135?
I love my 135L for candid street photography.

16-35 I guess is a good middle ground but IMO the 50L you currently have is a great street photography lens.

I love both my 35L and my 24L and both work really well for the street. I tend to reach for the 35L most of the time, Just throw it on the 5DII and hit the streets. PERFECT. Many of the truly great street photographers use Leica Ms and 35mm lenses. The DoF scales on those manual focus Leica M lenses are actually useful. They are less but fairly useful on the 35L and 24L.

I also love to go out with the 24L on my 5DII. Just depends on what mood I'm in. My most used lens is probably me 35L though.

You have a 17-40 so play around with it at 24mm and 35mm to see what you like best.

+1.

Sometime I'm thinking that 200mm or even 300mm maybe a better choice, too.

5D2 + 135L:

I dream of this lens to be used for my street work! Wide angle lets you get really close to people without them understanding :)
Though i must agree 35L a bit more practical concerning the subject - nicer wide angle. 24 could be a bit drastic :)

x_tan - 200mm on street??? u joking dude! This is more like stalking then. Not even talking about 300.

I'm a shy guy, and only want to observe & 'steal' people's action. So I never want any interpersonal interaction with the persons.

Maybe OP wants more connect with the people...

@300mm 'steal shoot':

I have so many street photography lenses, 35L, 16-35L, 70-200 2.8L
In past I had 135L but sold it for the more versatile & sharp 70-200 2.8L

My "street photography" walkaround lens is my 16-35 2.8L II, great lens also for video!
Before I thought of 24L, but too limited as a prime (and to close to my 35L).

So I would say 16-35 2.8II or 35 1.4L and if you're a sniper 70-200 2.8L

5D MKII :: 35 1.4L :: 85 1.8 :: 17-40 f4L :: 24-70 2.8L :: 70-200 2.8L IS :: 270 EXII :: 580 EXII :: NICNA PRO 1D CPL :: Thinktank Digital Holster 2.0
Past gear:

Wow, some truly amazing captures and thanks all for your input, I might try out a few combinations with the lenses I have now and see what works the best for my style.
Thanks again all.

I'm thinking to get a 70-200 2.8 or 100-400 for the same reason.
Just can't decide which one yet...

People tend to act out when they notice you taking their photos; if that is what you after, both 24L or 35L should do the job.

Traditional street photographers would always use wide angle lenses focused to the hyperfocal distance and walk around shooting from the hip. The shots have a much more personal feel compared to the shots sniped from 300mm etc. To each their own though.
