Ranger RX questions

I got to use a Ranger RX system this weekend it was the 400W system with two flash heads.
I liked the portability of the system, however the power is a bit low. I saw that there was a Ranger RX system with 1100Ws of power that cost just a little more then the dual 400 system for a single unit.


I just wonder one thing, can all the flash heads handle 1100Ws power there do seems to be some difference between them though.

Also the reason i would like 1100Ws is because i would be able to use it in harsh sunlight.

BTW anyone have any tips about the Ranger system, i find the batteries and flash heads very confusing because they're all named the same.

The 'Quadra' is the 400ws system. We call the Ranger 1100ws RX the 'Ranger'. The Quadra can handle most outdoor conditions except the brightest of sunlight. The Ranger pack is much heavier.... Something to think about. I have both and they are both great and serve their purpose. If it matters most days the quadra oes out with me. But i do weddings, so YMMV...

I'm big and tall so weight don't scare me as much, i would just hate it to get something that don't meet my needs. Also it would mostly see use outdoors.

I had both and sold the Ranger RX and kept the Quadra. For me 400ws is fine and I love the small pack system, it's not just the pack that's bigger, it's the heads, cables, bag etc etc. I shoot mainly fashion so I don't mind hardlight and I have a California Sunbounce incase I need some soft fill.

@Darkwand, no offence. Thw weight is really something to consider, even something like tripod can "weigh" a lot after a few hours of handling. Been there and done that.

I have 2 ranger's and could never go a quadra. The weight is worth it IMO.

I cannot guarantee that after reading it, you'll have your answer... but you will know almost everything there is to know about the Quadra and Ranger packs after reading it. Grab a coffee/beer and save about half a day to read it all.

All the heads for the Ranger RX can also be used with the Quadra RX via an adapter cable. However, the reverse is not true due to the lower power rating of the Quadra heads. There is no adapter available to connect a Quadra head to a Ranger RX pack unless a custom cable is made.

Yes, the batteries and the heads can be confusing. And to add to the confusion, the images used with some of these items sold online are not always the actual product images. That is the reason you need to read the specs very carefully, especially the manufacturer's SKU number.

The Ranger RX has a much bigger range of power, and has the ability to overpower the sun.

I've tried to convince myself to get the quadra multiple times, but in the end...I keep deciding that I'd rather have that extra power than a lighter bag. I've chosen the Ranger RX over the quadra 3 times now, and I don't regret it a bit. I often have my wife (5'2" 100lbs) or makeup artists (when my assistant isn't available) wear the ranger battery pack in a backpack, and keep the light on a lightpole....and they're able to do that for a fullday shoot.

110% agreed. Plus I prefer the additional weather sealing.

I never knew this. I have two quadra kits. They are not the RX version. Will it still work for a regular ranger head? Where can I find more information on this? Thanks.

In that case even Quadra would be too much. Quadra weigh more than a tripod (unless we are talking about studio stands).

Getting a good backpack helps to carry around the stuff. Definitely something to invest money in.

I think it should as the cable was available before the RX Quadra pack came out.

If it is, then that's really great news. I have two RQ kits and 4 batteries. I'm wondering how many pops I would get out of just one battery at full power. I'm going to start a separate thread.

I imagine it is the same as with Quadra heads, as it is still 400ws just on a different head.
