(Crop shield is the darkened area around the crop selection / crop area)

I don't have LR available (GNU/Linux), but measured GIMP and Picasa's by making a crop selection on a white image, taking a screenshot, and eyedropping it in GIMP. This shows percentage of black. Would be great if someone could do this in LR. I'll edit the first post to reflect it Research. Designing an image editing program.
