The Profoto website lists the Magnum as having a diameter of only 13.58 inches. So I can't see how it could ever be considered as a pretty big softbox. Luke did say that the photog used the Magnum as a beauty dish so I just imagined that the four layers of diffusion panel was placed right over the opening of the reflector. Or did I misunderstand him?

Yeah, directly over the reflector makes little sense. Shooting through a large scrim (we have a 6'x6' strectched over a metal frame in the studio) that is several feet from the light would give a large soft box effect, of course.

On a different note, anybody have suggestions on making a 'fake' concrete or asphalt floor? We have wood in the studio which is nice but there are many times I would prefer concrete. I'm one of several people sharing the space so "tear out a section of wood" is not going to work. And since it is shared space it needs to be something that is easily removed when I'm done shooting.

No internet?!?! ??? I'd really like to know how you made that post above, then. It might come in handy when I also experience a black out. ;) LOL

How about vinyl tiles that look like concrete?

+1 on this.... build a small riser out of 2x4's and OSB... adhere vinyl tiles. remove from space when not needed. :-)

Something like that would be perfect but the ones I've seen were too shiny and you could tell it was vinyl instead of concrete.

I'd like something like http://www.fauxpanels.com …/misc-panel.php?color=160 (external link) or http://www.fauxpanels.com …/misc-panel.php?color=158 (external link) but that is pretty expensive and it's meant for walls so I'm not sure how it would hold up to being walked on.

Denny makes "roll up" floors, one of which is called "Rough Concrete" (Roll up FloorCPMF4141 - Rough Concrete). The sample photos on the Denny site are fairly dreadful:

There are 51 different faux floors to choose from:

Interesting idea but the pricing is ridiculous.

Yeah, that's a lot of what I'm seeing.

I'm wondering if I could make believable "asphalt" by gluing tar paper onto plywood.

And maybe something like this on masonite for the "concrete". http://hindsvik.com/?p=4234 (external link)

So what's the verdict on the new big deep octa? Any word on when they'll be available in the US? :(
