A friend of ours runs a home daycare and has mentioned to me, several times, about having the kids pictures taken (school portriat style).

I have a single flash, stand, and 43" shoot through umbrella and am planning on ordering a reflector to go opposite the umbrella to help cut back on shadows. Also, I'll be building a DIY PVC backdrop holder and getting some assorted fabrics to use for backdrops.

What size reflector would you recommend?

Any hints/tips/suggestions for lighting/setup?

Look at Tim park's school kid pictures. One of the best I have seen and he shares his simple setup in those.

Those were lit with natural light via a large window, doesn't help when shooting in a room with only one small window. Thanks though.

He has another post with artificial light. Don't have the link handy. Search it. Natrual vs artificial, it is just light.

I understand that light is light... however you can't use a natural light setup if you don't have natural light.

I'm asking for advise on setup... the only setup there is a backdrop and a chair.

Thanks anyway.

Put chair at an angle to the backdrop. Put your strobe with shoot through on one side, say at 45 deg. angle. Put reflector on other side. Shoot. I am guessing no light meter so chimp. It is just one light setup. Can't be that hard. Reflector size, since small kids and sitting, you can use simple 2x3 foamcore if you want or one of those circular 5-in-1.

I've read a great post that would be informative for your purpose on another site - will try and dig it up for you.
