Videogames? A good hobby or a waste of time?

Hello,

How are you?
I decided to post this to know your opinion.
I'm currently 29 years old, nearly on my 30's... :)
Since I was about 11-12, I've been really into video games.
I've had multiple consoles, either portables or not and was also into PC's for over-clocking and gaming.
When I was a child, I'd play a lot and also in my 20's.
When I was single, I'd play hours and hours of rpg's and adventure games and all that...
Now, I'm married, have my house and the time is just not there.
I currently have a ps3 which sits there not being used and a Wii which I use to play the occasional games with the wife or friends.
So, I currently use videogames as a social activity and not much as a lonely entertainment.
Which got me thinking is just sitting alone in a couch playing a game for 50 hours and then another and so on, if it is a waste of time, or if it is a good hobby.
Also, if your into videogames, how do you manage to have the time to play all the good games out there?

Look forward to hear from you.
Cheers!

Time you enjoy wasting is not wasted.

I thought the whole point of hobbies was to "waste time". ;)

If you enjoy it, and it's not hurting you or others, then waste away.

EDIT: I dropped out of video games shortly after Doom II hit the scene. FPS games are fun, but they got way too complicated IMHO.

If you enjoy playing video games then it is a good use of time. I am married and I still play games. I have less time than I use to when I was a kid, but I still sneak in some time.

Some games are complete waste of time but fun anyway so thats ok (in that time enjoyed isnt wasted).

Games can be masterpieces of art in the same way movies are, those that make you think. Though thats mostly storytelling rather than the hack n slash / shoot parts (Dues Ex).

You've fooled around with the wrong drugs.

Not really a waste of time, I love gaming, though not much time now what's with having university papers and other hobbies (like photography :p) but I manage to sneak some time to play, and I freaking love it :D I don't care what others think.

I was just going to say this! The purpose of a hobby is to relax and enjoy yourself. If video games do that, then more power to you. A hobby doesn't have to be productive (photography, knitting, rebuilding old cars) to be a good use of time. Though I personally find more personal gratification in hobbies which are productive.

Not a waste of time if that time is allotted for gaming. Just like any other hobby
