In the C-130 world, the US bought only standard length planes. Once the Js went into production, the US (and Brittain and many others) just continued to buy the standard length. After a short period, the US and everyone else realized that with the much better power available in the J, it only made sense to buy the -30 stretched varriant, and so nearly all orders were converted to the longer version. That is why almost all Js you see are the long plane, and the early short version is rare indeed, and why some folks equate (incorrectly) that all short planes are not Js, and all long planes are Js. In reality, there are some long E's and H's and some short J's out there . . .

This plane, 64-4854 was built as a 1964 order and was originally an HC-130H. In the late 80's and early 90's, these varriants had the refueling pods added and were re-designated HC-130P (the best way to distinguish was the Fulton nose). After adding the in-flight refueling, they again got re-named MC-130P Combat Shadow, which is what they are called today. Their FMS configuration for the crew is also different from plain vanilla rescue birds. This particulat aircraft is two numbers away (and thus a sister ship) to the King-56 that crashed off the California coast in the last 90's when all four engines flamed out due to fuel mis-management. Only one survivor, the radio operator.

A few months ago there was a standard length J model from either Germany or Italy, at my base for the AATTC. It was essentially white too. I was under the impression that they only came in stretched models. :o

There are several short fuselage J's on the assembly line in the B-1 building right now - walked by them on Thursday on my way up to the F-22 line.

Just a couple of quick shots with the point & shoot last night, it's been a while since I pulled the S3is out of the bag.
