100-400 Canon lens

OK, just a little rant. Never never NEVER drop your lens. I just got the estimate to fix mine from Canon. Story - I dropped my lens about a month ago, straight down, taking it off the body, hard surface (concrete) when I was out photographing the moon I could not get a sharp image. Decided I better send it in, got a quote to start with of 75.00. OK cool. Just got the news 440 dollars. Again, I say NEVER drop your lens, take care of them. Had to get it fixed I use it a lot.

Big time, they say 3 to 4 weeks too.

Sorry to hear, but I'd gladly pay the $440 than have to buy a new one.

Definitely look into a personal articles insurance policy. Accidents happen and you want to protect yourself.

Wow! didn't think of that, I wonder if home owners would cover something like this, I don't even know what my deductible is? I should check.

What broke? I get the full report when I get the camera back. Come on it's Canon factory. They give you an estimate and when you accept it, then they repair and send the camera back with a full detail of what was wrong. I'll have that in about 3 to 4 weeks

You're home owners insurance might be a little stingy about it. I've heard of some people getting dropped by their insurance company after making a claim on their camera gear.

But I guess it never hurts to ask. A personal articles policy will be more comprehensive than your home owners policy. Myself and a lot of the other members use State Farm. I pay about $112 a year with no deductible.

The 100-400 is probably the worst lens to drop because of the push pull design. There are things in that plane of motion that... well... aren't supposed to be jammed. Stinks!

I went the personal article insurance policy. For $100/year, I get $7000 of coverage, zero deductible, covers theft, accident, acts of god, etc., but, not war.

However, I'd be afraid to needlessly invoke the policy in fear my rate would go up or my policy not renewed. That insurance is for something more major like theft or the repair bill goes well north of $1000.

Talked to our agent this morning, says that it is not covered, unless it was stolen of course. Repair is a separate policy. But...I now have insurance on all my gear for an additional 68.00, as I have cars, home, etc already. Otherwise it would cost 135 separate.

Received my lens back today from Canon. Repair ticket says they replaced the zoom ring, and adjusted the lens. It further stated "If I still have a problem with getting a sharp focus, please send your camera along with the lens and they will be matched and adjusted together". So, my next step is to take it out on the tripod and do some shooting. Hope it's comes out OK. Tomorrows task is already in the works.
