"err 99" is kind of a "catch-all" error code, menaing it can be any nuber of things, most of them not so good. For instance, I had an err 99 show up, and it turned out to be the shutter that had died.

If you haven't had the battery out for long (say, just long enough to switch batteries), try taking the main battery out, and the battery that controls the date and time, and just let the camera be for a few minutes. If that doesn't help, it's likely off to the service center. :(

Sorry to hear about your camera, I just got my 40D back today I had a CF Error 3 busted pins thanks to my brother. Anyway I know it has nothing to do with the Error 99 but in a way it dose. I overnighted mine out to California on Thursday and he got it on Friday by noon. By 3pm he had it fixed. By 4pm it was on it's way back to me. I got it today. Now that's service. I found him on E-bay he had a 100% feedback and all good ones. So I took the chance The camera is great now. It only cost me $79.00 plus one way shipping there. He sends it back Priority Mail with tracking number. He dose Error 99 repairs as well. You might check it out.

Err99 can be due to contacts that need cleaning, e.g. battery contacts, lens contacts. Quite a good way (if you're gentle!) is with a pencil eraser.

I also had this happen.... turned out to be the shutter as well.

Try using a different lens, remove or replace the cmos battery, clean lens contacts. If that does not work call in a repair order and ship it to canon. Do not monkey around with anyone who is not Canon certified.

Just another shutterbug.
