Sell both the 1.8 and the 1.4 and buy my extra Sigma :D

But seriously: It's my all purpose lens and the 1.8 and the canon 1.4 did not suit me.

sounds good, one thing though.... i hear the sigma 1.4 has focus issues. no problem if you're in manual, but if in auto focus, some batches have been known to have issues.

Not disagreeing with you but here is how I look at the Sigma:
I would say Canon 1.2L @ 1-2% failure rate in AF or something else
Canon 1.4 @ 5 - 7%
Sigma 1.4 @ 10 - 15%

People tend to exaggerate the problem. Plus the Sigma comes with a 4 year warrantee. Bad AF? Send it in!

Both Sigma 50mm that I have have been tested and are spot on.

if the sigma 50 f/1.4 performs as well as the canon 50 f/1.2, then there is an obvious winner due to difference in pricing. i have yet to try out the sigma, but you're making it easier for me to reconsider my choice in lenses.

The purpose of this poll is to find the best 50mm Canon compatible lens. Vote for the one that has the best balance of image quality, autofocus performance, durability, and reasonable price.

196 votes so far. Of the 196, 70 think that the $1500 lens has the best balance of image quality, autofocus performance, durability and REASONABLE PRICE. Wow. Next time, the poll should be limited to REASONABLE PEOPLE. Obviously, some taking this poll have difficulty with either reading or comprehension. Yes, it was a silly poll to begin with, with obviously skewed results, so I will abstain- thus not adding to the silliness. In other words, this poll appears to be a complete waste of 1's and 0's.

Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II
-Feels like a toy and way too much plastic for my taste. But for the price and the IQ it produce, its a great deal

Canon EF 50mm f/2.5 Compact Macro
-Used this lens once and hated the slow and loud AF system. If Canon comes out with a USM version of this lens, I would have voted for this one.

Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM
-Wasn't a big fan of the color. It was a bit to dead for me and the USM felt kind of bootleg.

Sigma 50mm F1.4 EX DG HSM
-Never had the chance to use this one before, but I don't like how each Sigma purchase is either a hit or miss. I don't like walking out the store and wondering whether I got a good copy or not.

Canon EF 50mm f/1.2L USM
-For the price tag Canon stuck on this thing, it should be superb and sharp as hell, but I'm not impress.

Canon 5D MK III
EF 17-40 f/4L USM
ER 50 f/1.2L USM
EF 24-70 7/2.8L II USM
EF 70-200 f/2.8L IS II USM

Technically, the 50mm F1.2L is the best, but when taking price into account, I'd vote for the Sigma.

Try the 50 1.8, and move up. It's a very easy lens to sell if you find you don't like it.

For overall quality and value it's hard to beat the 1.4.

i'd say for optical quality vs price you are right. build is subpar. and the lens doesn't have ring USM. now, i've owned this lens off and on for quite awhile and it does get damaged easily. once i tried to do indoor family shots with a remote and i couldn't get the 50 1.4 to lock focus. i switched to an L zoom and no problem.

has to be the L lens. in AI servo especially in low light i think a ring USM equipped lens will be the best.

I was under the impression the 50 L was quite slow to focus?
