This is probably my best with selective coloring. The background building had an odd color that didn't go well with the color of the truck, and the red stop sign was distracting, so by making the rest black and white it put more focus on the truck.

The 2nd post is simply a restatement of Sturgeon's Law: 90% of everything is crap. As a comment or critique it fails because it doesn't say what makes the 10% better than the rest or how that might apply to the OP's photo.

IMHO, selective coloring is like any other processing effect: the photo should be able to stand alone as a photo w/o it. So that to me that defines the 10%: is it a good photo w/o the effect and then also is it a better photo with it?

Two other considerations are:
a) the audience: have they seen this effect 1000 times before or is it novel (or novelly used?)
b) what will you think of this effect in this photo 5 or 10 (or more) years from now? Will you see it just as a trend (everyone was doing it so I had to try it) or as a classic?

I'll give an example commonly seen on this forum: very shallow DOF. Photo styles evolve, so it becomes more or less common over the years but does it ever really go out of fashion? Another example: soft-focus (including it's variations like "Lens babies" and pinhole lenses). The popularity of this style waxes and wanes even more over the years than just DOF. When everyone had box brownies, sharp photos were the exception and what was preferred. Once cameras improved enough that sharp photos were easy, suddenly the Diana/Holga craze made it fashionable again. The wheel has turned on this several times over the decades.

I think selective coloring kills most of these photos.

I used to use it then I felt like it was a gimmick. Needless to say, I don't do it anymore and look back on it like a lot of other things i've done. I cringe at these now haha
