Like most of you, I use a gimbal for my 500. I've been looking around for a new ballhead and had narrowed it down to RRS BH-55 and a Markins Q20. The Markins has a video on it's site that shows it handling a Nikon 800 as if it were gimbal-like.

Does anyone use just a ballhead for their longer lenses as opposed to a gimbal? Just wondering.

I use an Acratech long lens head on both a tripod and monopod with my 300 and 500mm lenses.

I have the Markins, it rocks. It tightens enough to use the 500 and pans well, you can adjust just enough to get movement without it dropping and crushing a finger! I love mine but would not give up a gimbal!

Yeh, but a bus full of people with a building on top could sit on top of a BH-55! :p
