Hi Anna,

Put the lens on tripod, set ISO100, f/8-11, and shoot some house or building & see what happen.

I still wasn't happy - so took it in : appears that it has a faulty AF motor.

As its still in its 3 month warranty I am talking to the shop; if they will pay for the repair (£250) I will keep the lens.

Its not something that was very obvious until I started to try and shoot moving objects- it was seemed fine on static objects.

Just my luck - the lenses are hard to come by used and I certainly can't afford a new one - this was at the top of my limit as it was.

Edit: Looking back at some of the other pictures here with this lens, all of mine were soft in comparison!

x_tan, first one's mighty fine. The crop works.

hania, i hate to hear of anyone having problems with their lenses.
It's no fun. As for your softness issue, many things can contribute
to softness. With this lens, it's important to use good shooting technique
as well as good post production techniques.

Thanks for that :).

Actually, seeing as it was paired with the 7D which also has problems (sob) it was probably amazing that I got what I did!.

I had actually sent it and the lens in for calibration - and when they found they couldn't calibrate the combo they looked further.

Next time I drop/hit a combo I shall send both in for checking (I half dropped the 7D and 100-400 and chipped a bit off the lens casing; sent the 100-400 in and got it repaired but didn't think to send the 7d in also - which turned out has a mirror box problem due the above fall)) .

We are off to New Zealand in Nov and I want to make sure all is working fine - so am glad this problem with the 7D was also picked up.

I would never have had it checked otherwise and then wondered why my photos were rubbish!

Update: the seller quite happy to pay for repairs so great :) looking forward to having another go with it!
