On my 7D, I separate the AF from Metering, repurposing the * button for AF
, and shutter button for Metering. I don't recall seeing the same option for the Live View button though.
Me too... I basically swapped the functions of the "AF On" and * buttons. (* activates AF, AF On activates AE Lock).
The * button is bigger and a little more outboard, just seems to fall under my thumb better. But mainly I did this because on older cameras that I've used, and on some of the earlier battery grips, there wasn't an AF On button... so the only choice was to use the * button. Kinda got in the habit.
OP, I think it's just a matter of getting accustomed to the new camera. It probably will become second nature with a little more practice, to use the right button to activate AF. There's always a bit of a learning curve going from one camera to another, even model to model within one brand...
I used to use 50D alongside 5DII. It always concerned me that the image replay and the image delete buttons were in the same place on these two models. I can't recall ever accidentally erasing an image, though.
The 7D is highly customizable, but the Live View button isn't one of the assignable buttons. However, if you don't use it much, you can go into the menu and disable Live View... so the button will do nothing when you accidentally press it.
