Thanks! I haven't read those reviews (headed there now) but so far the AF is a little hit or miss. I haven't taken enough shots to determine whether it's the extremely shallow DoF, especially at f/2, or the AF being spotty. This shot was manually focused using Live View.

I have the Tamron 60mm macro with a 60D - no autofocus problems. Also it is a lot quieter than I expected (not having a USM or PZD motor).

It does have a long way to go between infinity and close focus. If it is focused close, and you point it far away (or vice versa), it will sometimes head in the wrong direction and have to turn around and come back. I think that is normal, as if the focus is way off it has to guess which way to go.

The wide f/2 should help autofocus, not hurt it, I think.

One more thing I just remembered. With my zoom lens, I had the 60D setting C.Fn III 1 "lens drive when AF impossible" set to 1:stop focus search, so it wouldn't keep hunting, But with the 60mm macro lens, I had to set it to 0:Continue focus search, or it would not focus at all when changing from close to far. It wouldn't even try - just blink the green dot and not move. With the setting changed to 0 it works well.

hey David, how would you figure out the rate to charge an Art Gallery that wants pictures taken for their web site and advertisement? no prints of anything involved.

and just to make this somewhat 60D related i might borrow my buddies 60D for some shots.

I feel ya. With this new 50L purchase, it set me back for the 70-200L II purchase, but no regrets, the lens performed wonderfully when it needed the most.

Yes, ef lenses are built for full frame but can also be used on crop. Canon marks the mount point on ef-s lenses with a white square and of course they cannot be used on full frame without huge vignetting and sometimes mirror slap. (mirror hits the back of the lens)

If your considering full frame, definitely stick with ef lenses. (mount point has red dot)
