This game is to help those of us who are trying to learn new editing tricks.

Here's the breakdown of the game. I have posted a picture, re-sized to exactly 1024 pixels maximum on the long side. Otherwise, this photo was taken from the camera as is and unedited by myself.

The game will last 7 Days and whoever can produce the best edited image (as judged by me) will be picked and it'll be their turn to post their unedited picture for all of us to take a crack at.

The participants must have their "Image Editing OK" turned on and they must provide at least a simple breakdown of how they edited the image, some entrants are a little vague on this point, please give us all details so we can learn and share tips. For instance if you use the unsharp mask tool or Smart Sharpen, provide us with the adjustments you used so others can try them out.

You can post multiple images, but the first image you post will be the one that is judged - all other images will be considered for knowledge and tip use only.

Also, please keep all comments, be they positive or negative, to yourself until after the game has ended.

If you happen to be the winner of the game please start the next one with the title of the game and the following number. For example…the next game should read "Before & After #384."

Ends on Sunday, October 2, at 4:00 pm PST

My friend's parents were visiting earlier this year and this is the only shot I got with all four of them together.

Here's a link to the original RAW .CR2 file (external link)

It will be tough to recover the shadowed areas without the .CR2 files but here's an "undeveloped" jpeg:

Replacing my Canon 7D, Tokina 12-24mm, Canon 17-55mm, Sigma 30mm f/1.4, 85mm f/1.4, and 150-500mm with a Panasonic Lumix FZ1000. I still have the 17-55 and the 30 available for sale.

My attempt. My skills aren't good enough for this one , but it was fun trying. Started off in DPP adjusting levels, then switched into pse9, cropped to 8x10, a little bit off dodging and burning, used poly tool to pick out backgrounf then gaussian blur.
Tried using layer masks, but that was a total disaster.

Anyway here it is

Just a straight attempt at bring the lady back in the pic. Increased exposure and highlight recovery in ACR then in CS4 duplicated BG and made a selection of the lady and placed on her own layer. Levels and contrast adjustment and tidied up edges. Crop, smart sharpen and some lightening and darkening with 50% grey layer. Stroke to finish.

I also goofed around with this during the week but kept running into problems with tone. It never occurred to me to try a black and white conversion.

DreDaze, sorry, you won, so you have to post the next challenge.

08photog, glad you had fun goofing around with it. Looks like the "regulars" weren't even willing to give it a try.

Nigel, you did about as well as could be done with this photo. Blame it on the original capture - I don't know if it can be saved without Angie's Mom looking like she was cut from another image and pasted in with photoshop.

Vasbyt, you have the most sensible solution! Good thinking.

Just in case any of you are interested, this is the best I could get out of it. I didn't have any luck masking off the mom so I did everything with painted and gradient adjustments in Lightroom.

I don't think so, I think it has more to do with what is going on in peoples lives that week. Sometimes every one just gets busy at the same time...

Congrats on the win..
