I'm going to Albuquerque for the hot air balloon events. For mornings, I'll be working with either Chad or Sean Dennis (both pilots) and I may even get to fly as well. I flew last time I was there (with Chad) and had lots of great pictures.

Anyway, I'd be free from late mornings to mid afternoon. Can any of you suggest a nice place that I could go to around New Mexico including any native American ruins, interesting parks, and such? Grand Canyon is out as it's almost a day drive from Albuquerque to Grand Canyon :/

Go up and explore Santa Fe and Taos.

Love that area. Last time I was at the Balloon Fiesta, I went touring in the afternoons to places like Old Town (the church, in particular), Petroglyphs N M, the Indian Cultural Center in Alb, Coronado S P, Tent Rocks, Isleta Pueblo, Acoma Pueblo, etc. A little farther out, there are lots of trips that may take a full day from Alb. Santa Fe can take several days, then there is Taos and Taos Pueblo, but my favorite is the church at Rancho de Taos. In fact, if you drive the "High Road to Taos" (from Espanola) you will find several old mission churches. Santuario de Chimayo is most famous and can be crowded, but worth it.

Bandelier, Chaco Canyon and Aztec are great places to see ruins. Then there are numerous Wilderness Areas with fascinating formations. Ojito is the closest to Alb and has several good trails. Lots of good stuff around Abiquiu (Georgia O'Keefe country).

Can you tell I love NM?

Thanks for a few suggestions, there are a few places I haven't been to yet. And I do like going to Santa Fe, lots of interesting places to shop there as well.

We were in north NM and AZ in early June. Love the area around Farmington. Great place from which to do lots of day trips.

Shopping? SHOPPING?!?!?!
This is a photography forum! Get with the program! :-P

The Very Large Array has an open house that weekend. http://www.vla.nrao.edu/genpub/tours/guided/ (external link)
(You can tour the facility at any time.)

May I suggest you visit Bear Mountain Cafe for breakfast and/or lunch. It's located in Magdelena, just down the road from the observatory. http://bearmountaincoffeehouse.com/Bearmountain/Bear.html (external link)
Danielle cooks some superb food - IMO better than anything in Socorro.

Further south is the Trinity Site, also holding an open house that weekend. There isn't a heck of a lot to see, other than a shallow crater now overgrown with grass, but if you're a history fan you may find the drive worthwhile.

I live in Albuquerque, so I don't really do many touristy things around here (haven't been to the balloon fiesta in probably 6 or 7 years). If you want to do some nice hiking in Albuquerque itself, head out to Elena Gallegos Picnic Area, they call it a picnic area but there is some pretty easy hiking there, and it's not bad scenery either, especially if you go at sunrise or sunset.

For some day trips, you could go to Tent Rocks, which is a really nice place for hiking, about an hour or two drive away from Abq., I would say.

Or, if you want an easy way to get up to Sandia Peak, then take the tram (or hike. I prefer hiking myself, although it's quite a difficult hike). It's the longest tramway in the US. (one of few things that NM has to brag about, in my opinion.)

Or, for some other scenery-ish things, you could go to Abiquiu. It's very secluded and about a 2 to 3-hour drive from Abq. Georgia O'Keefe, a famous painter, used to live around there. There are some really nice landscapes if you go around there, and/or a bit further up north to Ghost Ranch.

Anyway, those are the recommendations from an Abq. dweller, if you enjoy landscapes more than city life or historical sites, then I would say go hiking in the Sandias or head up north because there can be some nice scenery. I guess I would appreciate it more if I didn't live here. ;)

I took this pic from the top of the tram there. I'm not a big fan of heights and it wasn't that bad of a ride, but if it's bad weather take a jacket to the top.

I'd rather be judged by twelve than carried by six.
Canon 60D gripped 18-135, 10-22, 300 4L and nifty fifty.

Wily, I'll be there too both weekends (and hosting the Kelby Worldwide Photo Walk on Saturday October 1st, if you're interested: http://worldwidephotowalk.com …ates-balloon-fiesta-park/ (external link)) we're leaving Sunday night for a seven hour drive to be at Horseshoe Canyon in Page, AZ for sunrise, then spending a day or two there to check out the local scene and antelope canyons (Canyon X is amazing but we won't have time to do that again this trip). We're then heading to North Rim, South Rim and then working our way back for the second Fiesta weekend.

Sandia Peak is worth it, go towards sunset and then eat at Santiago's at the return point of the tram. If this is your thing take a trip to the Rio Grande Zoo and Botanical Gardens.
