practice and practice.

^This, but ALSO. I noticed until I was able to shoot with larger, wide open apertures I could never achieve the flare I was going for..........not saying go out and buy L lenses to shoot flare or anything, but general the kit lens 3.5-5.6 just doesn't cut it. Not to mention the flare you get with cheaper glass is never as interesting due to a reduced number of glass elements inside the lens creating the refracted light which = flare.

Just saw this thread...Love the sun flare portraits if done right! Subscribed!

Would removing the hood make a huge difference in the outcome when attempting these type of shots?

I took a decent sun flared shot with the hood on, but just wondering if it would have turned out even better with it off? Is it also true that a cheap UV filter can help as well?

Yes.

I shoot with a filter on and without a hood in direct sunlight and most of my shots, if not all, usually have sun flares. It depends on how much or the angle that I point into the sun but sun flares nonetheless.

I have tried this so many times at the beach and have never been successful. Thank you for the inspiration

I really like sun flare in pics, so here's one of mine. Took it just for fun.

Thanks. Maybe I'll get a cheap filter to try it out and reverse the hood with any attempts. To me it's all about timing and location to really nail those beautiful sun flares. It also doesn't hurt to have someone good looking to pose for you too...

Ok here is an attempt I took a week or two ago. Don't mind the boring look and pose. The wife wasn't happy with me bothering her that time! :p

I Used the Sigma 30 with hood on wide open.
