Nikon's Latest Marketing Fail

From their facebook today: "We know some of you took offense to the last post, and we apologize, as it was not our aim to insult any of our friends. Our statement was meant to be interpreted that the right equipment can help you capture amazing images. We appreciate the passion you have for photography and your gear, and know that a great picture is possible anytime and anywhere."

So they were actually serious lol, thought they were trolling us.

Somebody does not know much about marketing!!! You don't put a product on the market and say it is just another..... That is not how you stay in business. You put something out and say it will change the world weather it really can or not( i.e. Gary Fong)

How many other products are advertised every day that cant do what they claim? Yet this one some how is different?

Had a feeling that was coming. There were a lot of ways to say what they said (gear is important), without saying what they did (you are your gear) ... probably a flub by an intern or a "consultant." But man, what a flub.

Someone got fired.

Puffery is normal. Showing someone with a kit lens and an XT(x) at a football game alongside clearly professional (and post-processed) results is just that -- an implication that you will get better results, if only you have the right (expensive) gear.

What Nikon did was post an assertion of a direct causal relationship.

As for false claims, I've always been amazed that herbal products, and chiropractors, and many more, claim any benefits without having one shred of evidence.

Yeah, Nikon/Canon, etc. want to sell product, so they want you excited about gear, but this was not a well thought out post at all. 10 minutes of going through ANY photography forum or spending 10 minutes with any accomplished photog you'll pick up the idea that a good photog can make 'cheap' gear sing. Same analogy goes for most skills.

A much better way to state:
The right gear can help you enhance you photographic vision. What Nikkor lenses have you used that have helped you push your creative boundaries? Stories!

That would have been an excellent post. So much better than the Nikon version. I like it.

Oh, it's marketing, all right. Bad marketing. The post has generated over 1,600 negative comments, mostly from existing customers. Defend it all you want, this is a fail.

A good number of those are from obvious Canon users who are just trolling.

LOL, that statement is so funny, but yet so common. The next time I eat a really good meal maybe I should ask the chef if he has really good pots and pans. I mean, it's the equipment, not the person, right? LOL

Look at the outrage from a Nikon statement on a Canon forum, I'm thinking the marketing is working.

The campaign is clearly directed towards the bottom of the barrel; you know the type... [walks into Best Buy] I want a DSLR cause their pictures are the awesomeness I read it on the inTARDnet. Lets see, the Canon bottom-of-the-line-POS is $30 cheaper than the Nikon and has 1 more megapixel. Sold.

I'm guessing that's what Ansel Adams did
