I currently use the T2i . . . what is the next step up (least expensive also) that has a full frame sensor in the Canon family? Thanks. . .

5Dc would be your best bet but new, 5DMK2 would be the next option for that.

Do you have a compelling reason or reasons to go full frame?

I'm asking, because to get a full-frame body that has an up-to-date feature set and sensor (with the best resolution and high-ISO/low-noise performance) you would need to be looking at the 5D2, which certainly is a "step up", but at a price:)!

And, if you spend time here you will see that the 5D2 is not as well-suited for some types of photography, so you need to get a real feel of what you want to shoot and whether the 5D will be the best for your photo wants/needs.

1DSmark II is worth looking at, prices on it are about the same as the 5D2.

Also not to mention if you have any EF-S lens they will not work on a FF body. So like mentioned a move to full frame isn't nessassary for everyone, all depends on your shooting style

Or the 1ds mark 1. You can get one for $800-$1000.

What do you shoot? What lenses do you have? What about the T2i is holding you back?

Any easy way to tell if you will not miss the af and burst of your newer crop is shoot everything on the center point for a while and see if you miss using the outer points. If already do that, you probably won't even notice a difference in the af system.

Second, how often do you use burst mode? Never? Another reason to step up.

Those are the only two real drawback to the 5dx.

the 5D2 is not as well-suited for some types of photography (Tony Long quote)
Huh? Then you are saying that all 35mm film cameras are not suited for "some types" of photography? My, my. I wonder what we missed over the last 170 years of photography.

Full frame camera are irrelevant today. Crop-sensors are the new 35mm. There's simply no need to use FF cameras anymore.
