Not the bases that come with the flashes, but stands for holding a flash on a receiver. (Yeah, you probably knew that, but it doesn't hurt to clarify I guess). I have been wanting to not use full size tripods for my flashes, and preferably something light that I dont mind carrying around for when I want to setup a couple of flashes. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated as always. Thanks!

Not to be cavalier, but the cheapest ones you can find. Speedlites are light, and you dont need a heavy duty stand with air cushioning to hold one up. Look at the Impact (house brand) stands at B&H. They have a decent kit with 2 stands, swivel brackets, and umbrellas for $99.

Not Cavalier at all, could be exactly what I'm looking for, thanks! :)

If you're talking about this kit right here --

Looks pretty nice to me!

I bought that kit and it works great for me. Have yet to have a problem with them yet, and in going on 3 or so months.

just remember you don't want the cheapest out there. the 580exii cost is over 400 and if you have 2 setup and they fail or fall over it could cost you more in the long run get some stable units like the manfrotto's with the sand bags so they don't blow over or someone doesn't accidentally bump them and cause you grief ...

Good point but it is a very simple unit, crossing my fingers never had one fail, but they screw down tight and don't loosen up. There isn't much more you can improve on. besides different leg configurations, other than putting a $$ logo sticker on them. What ever you get, buy or make sand bags.
I see so many post dont buy cheap, but its not an option when you are poor just out of college, with school debt and in a jobless economy. Id love to have some 580ex's, manfotto's, maybe some AB800s and hell a 70-200 2.8 but that will have to wait. I have to say my YN flashes, Cactus triggers and cheap light stands do just fine with my awesome lil nifty fifty. Have yet to have a single malfunctions with any of my equipment, and im going on 4months or so.

Impact stands are horrible. One of mine came loose (you can pull one of the segments 'off') not long after I got it.

if you're just going to stick bare speedlites on em, I suppose they'll work. but anything with some weight on it, i'd be weary (i.e. large umbrellas etc)

As long as you keep to under the max load weight it should be fine, they are only rated to support what, five pounds? I doubt that a umbrella and speed light are going to go over that unless you use a monster (over 48 inches) umbrella, then you should have some sand bags and it will all be good.

I appreciate what you are saying, but the spread on the feet of the impact is the same as my manfrotto stands. If one is going to blow over, the other one would in the same circumstance. Weighting and stabilizing is necessary regardless of the stand manufacturer.

Yup, just the same as if someone bumps one and it goes over, unless a higher quality stand has a movement speed detector which inflates a cushion for the stand and flash to land on, it's no better than the 'budget' Impact line, etc.

I don't know what you consider "inexpensive" but the Manfrotto Nano stands are perfect for speedlites. They also collapse to a very compact size for easy transport.

Here you can see them next to my Gitzo 1541T tripod. In that bag I can fit two Nano stands, two umbrellas, the tripod and swivel brackets:

For my on the go ultra compact kit I use a Manfrotto Nano Stand and a Manfrotto Umbrella Swivel Mount and a collapsible Wescott Umbrella. LINK (external link)and LINK (external link) and LINK (external link). Personally I wouldnt recommend any cheaper than that.

You can screw the bolt that the Manfrotto Umbrella Swivel Mount comes with into the stand of the 580EX II. Or I also have these as an option: LINK (external link)

As far as triggers go, I use the Elinchrom Skyport system and a Flash Zebra hotshoe mount/cable LINK (external link)with the Universal Skyport to trigger a 580EX II.
