i always have a thing about buying a used item.. going home with it, not knowing the history of it...

- I rather buy things brand new knowing what i only did to it.. under the bed sheets.. jk :)

... but since lenses don't depreciate much or quickly I think the peace of mind going with new is worth the slightly higher cost.

That.. I buy new because the price differance is just not great enough. Thank goodness there are people out there who buy used though. :) I've sold a lot of lenses.

Because there's little depreciation, I've sold used lenses for the same or even slightly more than what I paid to acquire them in the first place.

By the way... there's a 3rd option that should be considered: Refurbished. My 24L is refurbished!

I prefer to buy NEW lenses at USED prices...that about rounds it out.

It depends for me as well. If it's a lens I know I'm going to keep, I buy new. These lenses are usually my work horse. But if I just want to try something out for a bit, I'll save a couple hundred and buy used.

Most of my lenses are used or refurbed. Never had a problem with any of them. I always test them first, though. I don't think I'd buy a used one if I couldn't take some shots and check them in Photoshop first.

My 55-250 was new and came with the camera. My Rokinon 8mm FE is new. The 24-105 is a refurb. The rest are used.

New, they do not depreciate that much plus with new you get 1 year of free warranty repairs/calibration. Based on my experience with Canon lenses this is not insignificant, by buying used you may end up paying more in the end.

how about used from ebay vs in person...

i bought my 135L on ebay. For me its a non-standard lens and figure it was a relatively low use. The more standard a lens is the more I would be inclined to buy new - granted std is relative to the user.

Both. I purchase mostly new because the price spread isn't enough for me to buy used. My 35L new cost less than used on this forum.

I did purchase the 85L used since it was the MkI version. Didn't need the features of the MkII and saved about 35% off MkII used prices. For me, a older version, high quality lens will be fine for my needs and save me quite a bit.

I typically buy used. In fact, all my lenses except the (former) 18-55 and 55-250 I've bought used.
I prefer to keep the camera bodies new or refurb though.
